DIGGLES

Category:  miniature herbivorous sauruslike creatures

Origin:

Originates in Africa, but because of their gentle nature, and small, cute sizes, these loving creatures have been the means of many Trades. Wizarding family love to give them as pets for their children. That’s how Diggles are nowadays found practically all over the worlds, except the very cold northern regions, where Diggles just wouldn’t survive due to the cold.  Diggles though do not live out in the wild  anywhere else than in Africa.  For example over here in Britain you will only be able to obtain one in some magical pet-shops.

Distinguishing features:

Diggles are rather small creatures. An adult grows no larger than a grown wizards hand. They usually have brown, leathery but very unexpected soft warm skin, the 4 stubby legs have dull rounded nails that couldn’t harm even the smallest insect.  Circling their head is a boney crest covered with skin. They only possess one eye in the middle of their faces with a yellow marking around the upper and lower lid and a large thin mouth. This eye comes in all different pretty colours, and its exciting to wait for newborn Diggles to open their eyes after one day just to see which eye-colour they have.

Diggles lay about 6 – 10 eggs and a tiny fully grown Diggle usually hatches after about 4 weeks. Diggles lay eggs only twice a year,  at the beginning of Spring and Summer. Male and females look exactly the same.

Nature:

Diggles have a very amiable nature. They are very gentle and loving creatures.  Because of their cute small size, the pretty colourfull eyes and the soft touch to their skins, they are very much loved and favours by kids as pets.  The sounds they make to communicate or when they express contentment is really adorable and resembles the soft gurgling and murring sounds of a wizard baby.  Diggles are very easy to look after. Their movement is very slow and plodding. They are trainable.

Note: If you think of keeping  Diggles as pets, be kind and buy at least 3 of them, preferably more.  Diggles get very sad when kept alone and dye awfully by starving to death.  Nevertheless, Diggles are very affectionate to their human owners and get awfully attach to them.

Food:

Diggles’ favorite food is fresh lettice leaves right out in the garden.  They also like other leafy plants and another speciality you can make your Diggles happy with is an occasional young flubberworm. They almost always eat the worms in twos,  each starting at an end. Also fresh water should be made available, Diggles don’t really need to drink much and survive up to two months without water all together.

Special magical features:

Diggles are born with one prettily coloured eye of which each one in a  brood could actually turn out with a different coloured eye from the other.  Once a month Diggles shed their eye, a process which takes about 3 days. During this time, the eye stays closed and swells up to its double size under the lids.

Its important to give Diggles a quiet undisturbed place until the process is finished.  Sudden Shock during the shedding of the eye can cause a Diggle to die instantly.

Once the eyes is ready to be shed, its squeezed out by the two lids, and a new one has already grown in its place.

USE: the shed eyes harden up as soon as they drop out of the sockets and turn into brilliantly shimmering beads  that can be used for making jewellery, like Digglye-necklaces, very much favoured by young witch-girls.  A remarkable feature of those eyes, once their beads is, that they flash up occasionally, which looks utterly pretty.
