DRAGONS

General Dragon Info

A few general things about Dragons:

The female of the Dragons are usually larger and therefore stronger, with maybe a very few exceptions due to a special breed. All Dragons are aggressive towards humans, esp. children, only highly skilled wizards should approach a Dragon.

The fire they exhale is thrust out either mainly through their mouths, but there are breeds that thrust out the flames through their nostrils.

The majority of Dragons  live up in mountainous regions.  But there are a few breeds of Forest-Dragons and Water-Dragons. There is only one breed left that actually inhabites valleys and that is the Common Welsh Green.

We do not yet know the purpose or reason of this, but Dragons are magically attracted and drawn to glittering and sparkling things, thus they pick up items, like jewellery and gems and hord them in their caves.

All parts of a Dragon have magical properties: hide, blood, liver, horn, heart, eyes, ridges, eggs. But eggs are class A non-tradeable goods with the purpose to not extend the number of these dangerous though beautiful beast by breeding them 'at home' as it were.

The horn of the Roman Longhorn Dragon is a class B non-tradeable item in order to keep misuse down to a limited number of wizards who know what they are doing when they use the grounded horn in potions. (see Prof. Snape for details)

Norwegian Ridgeback:

Black or Green in colour, similar to the Horntail, but tail has no spikes. The ridge down the back is of a deep black colour. Its a very aggressive species even against its own kind. The Norwegian feeds mainly on all sorts of land mammals as well as water-dwelling creatures (whale calf).  Its young develope the fire-breathing ability rather early in life compared to other breeds  (at 1-3 months).

Peruvian Vipertooth:

As the smallest of the dragons the Vipertooth is the most swift and agile of them all, especially in flight. It is only about 15 ft long, with smooth scales, and copper coloured. It has a jet black ridge from its head down to its tail. Its horns are very short, but its fangs are extremely venomous similar to that of snakes. It feeds on goats and cows and favours humans most.

Hebridian Black:

The Hebridian needs an extensiv territory which must at least be 100 sq. miles. It grows about 30 ft long, with rather rough scales. Its eyes stick out due to their brilliant purple colour. Its ridges down its back may be shallow but they are razor sharp. Its favorite food is deer, though it has been known to carry of large dogs, vuvelles, Entelodonts and other cattle. They prefer mountainous regions covered with thick forests. A reason why they have been migrating from the Hebrides to southern Scotland are also sometimes seen in the south of England. The Clan MacFusty is looking closely after this breed to prevent its extinction.

Hungarian Horntail:

The Horntail is one of the most dangerous of all the dragons. Its scales are black and it looks very lizard-like. Its got spikes of hard horn at the end of its tail which are a dangerous weapon, especially paired with the flame this dragon can breath: up to 50 ft in length, the longest one known. This dragon has yellow eyes and bronze horns. It feasts mainlyon goats and sheep and whenever possible on humans. This breeds egg-shell are the hardest of all, but for the young about to hatch this proposes no difficulty at all due to their spikey tail with which they actually club their way out.

Chinese Fireball:

A scarlet smooth scaled breed with a fringe of horn-spikes around its forehead. The eyes are protuberant. A native of China and not found in Britain. Though its rather agressive it nevertheless doesn't mind sharing a large teritory with up to 2 others. The flames its breathes through its nostrils not mouth in the shape of a puffy mushroom. Its most favoured food are mammals, but it prefers pigs and humans when it can.

Common Welsh Green:

Our own native dragon, which unusually it may seem actually enjoys the valleys and its lush grashlands particulary in Wales. Its mainly green coloured in order to camoflage itself when in stealth. Its nest though is built up in the mountains. The fire it breathes dart out in thin jets of flames. Its unique roar is easily distinguishing this bread, as its very melodious.  This is the least troublesome of all dragons. Its favorite food is sheep and it actually actively tries to avoid humans.

Golden German Alpine:

This is a golden coloured Dragon. Particulary beautiful to look at during the night when its scale seem to light up the sky like a star. There have been seen deep green versions of this breeds in the many thick forests of southern Germany. The golden Dragon though prefers mountains and bleak peaks. Its eyes are green and its about 26ft long. On its head it has four horns, two shorter ones on its forehead and two long sharp pointed ones towards the back of its head. With long fangs and razor sharp very long claws similar to the Velociraptor of ancient times, this is dragon is amongst the most dangerous of all. It mainly feeds on cows and sheep, but favours horses and doesn't show any dislike for humans, particulary young and tender ones.

Ukrainian Ironbelly:

This lovely fellow is indeed a very large breed and weighs about 6 tonnes. Its heavily build body is rotund and slower in flight than most other dragons. Nevertheless don't underestimate its agility in the air, even go' me roiding on it..*chuckles* got a pic to prove it..erm...Its eyes are deep red and spooky when you happen to meet on at night. The talons are long and quite sturdy looking. At the side of its head its got webs between thin horny extentions similar to those seen on sea-creatures. This dragon feeds on cattle mainly, but will eat sheep if nothing else is around. An unusual fact about this particular dragon is, that it carried off a sailing boat in 1799 from the black see, possibly turkish pirates. No humans seemed to have been on board at the time. Its suspected that the boat contained a large treasure of sparkling gems and jewelery. Dragons are not only dazzled by it but also smell them a mile off.

Roman Longhorn:

The Longhorn has dark green scales and long glittering horns, should the light shine on it favorably. It delights in goring its prey before roasting it. The Longhorn prefers to live near lakes and rivers. These horns are very much sought after for use as a potion ingredient for which it will be grounded to powder. Like many other dragons, it lives in a reservation in Italy nowadays because they are in danger to be extinct because it has been hunted down for its horns. The horns have now been pronounced class B-non-tradable goods!

Antipodean Opaleye:

The Opaleye is very common in New Zealand, where its home is, but it also migrated to Australia recently. Its prefered living habitat are the wide and open green valleys of NZ, an unusual trait it has in common with the Green Welsh. It received its name due to the glittering multi-coloured eyes which oddly have no pupils. The scales have an iridescent pearly look depending on the light falling on them. This Dragon weighs about 2 - 3 tonnes and is not too agressive. It only kills to feed, when its hungry. The flame it breathes is of a very deep scarlet colour. Its favorite meal are sheep, with an occassional kangaroo, if it happens to pass its way at such a time.

Canadian Water dragon:

These dragons tend to spend most of their lives in the water (usually freshwater lakes with outlets to the sea). They sometimes migrate when the lakes freeze over and are fish- and seal-eaters, large fish of course. They are depicted with having a long neck, small head with lots of sharp teeth, and paddle-like legs used for maneuvering. Similar to the most famous water dwelling creature,  the Loch Ness "monster." Down, deep in the blackest waters of the lake, hundreds of feet deep is its nest, or rather, it digs its eggs into the ocean or lake ground. The Canadian Water Dragon often comes to the surface and even walks around on land. But it has no wings to fly, but gills to breath under water and webs between its toes.

Swedish Short Snout:

The Short snout of Sweden has yellow eyes and silvery blue skin, its scales are very smooth and the slivery hint makes the skin sparkle at times. This skin is much sought after for manufacturing protective gloves and shields. The flame this Dragon breathes is brilliantly blue and is blown out through the nostrils and not the mouth. The flame is very strong and can reduce timber and bones to ashes within seconds. Its prefered territory is the wild uninhabited mountainous region of Sweden fairly north. The food this dragon prefers are reindeer, which is quite common in the north of sweden.

Spanish Diamond Speckle:

This breed is very  unique. They evolved in the south of Spain, on the rocky heights of Gibraltar, now found all over Spain, France and Germany, though it favours dry air in the Pyrenaes. Its body is pure white with a bluish belly. Its eyes are extremely protruding and blue. Two long horns shaped in an angle towards the back grown from the side of its head. The tail very long and thin. But most unusual is its wings, which are a mixture of Bat- and Butterfly-wings in shape and very colourful. The texture of the wings are similar to those of Bats but have powdery substances on its top that gets stuck to trees or rock. All over its wings are specks so brilliant specks in the shape of sparkling stars. This feature gave it its name 'Diamond Speckle'. This breed is also very small ,about 17ft long with a soft puff of flame emnating when it breathes on you. Its the most harmless of all Dragons. Though its teeth are many and needle pin sharp, they feed mainly on mammals the size of dogs and foxes. They are not scared of humans but only attack if threatend.
