GOOMP

Category:   lizardy domestic magical creature

Origin:

Used to be found in desert regions only about 1000 years ago, but since its been domesticated it can be found all over South America, in the mountain regions as well as in the valleys and plains. Not so, in the Amazonas.

It's been noted, that some Goomps have now appeared in the southern parts of the USA being sucessfully bred.

Distinguishing Features:

A Goomp has a lizardy look to it. Though its about the size of a large pig. It's skin is tough and on the top of its head and back and parts of its shoulders and thighs are covered by a hard horny shield as its protection. If the sunlight touches it, this shield shimmers in all colours. A Goomp has a lizard-like tongue forked at the end which is very sensitive and also flexible. It can extend its tongue to any lenth it likes.

Goomps may be very boring and dump creatures, but they are very much liked and domesticated for their eggs. These eggs in fact are Egg-Surprises. The size of the eggs are equal to an Ostrich egg, multicoloured and magically always contain something useful or not too useful. A tool, toy, gift, or other items. The only drawback on this is that the Goomp only lays such an egg twice a month. Thus wizards like to keep several of them. The problem here is, that a Goomp does not like large herds. If only feels happy with one or two other Goomps around. If held in larger groups, it stops laying eggs.

Yet to assure reproduction of  Goomps, the eggs must be allowed to get fertilized by a male Goomp. This can only happen twice a year. If an egg IS fertilized, it's colour will change to a rich purple to make sure the egg isn't mistaken for an egg-surprise.

The developement of the young within the egg takes 4 months.

The Goomps make a humming noise when communicating with each other that can sometimes be mistaken for a wizard humming a song to himself. It is very melodious.

Nature:

Goomps are very tame and calm magical creatures. They are very slow plodding along and not of the very clever sort. In fact they are rather boring to watch.  If scared though, they stomped down anything that gets into their way as they are unexpectedly heavy. Goomps don't have teeth. They crush their food with the boney edge of their mouths similar to a tortoise.

Food

Goomps are pure herbivores and eat all plants and blossoms. Green leavy things though are their favorite. They also take soft or slightly cooked vegetable-roots.

Special magical featureand use:

In ancient times the use of its shield was used in battle to reflexed magic spells. The shield is unbreakable and therefore also used in creating artifacts or household utility items.

Egg-Surprises: are especially favoured by wizard's children, for the fun things they can contain, but even a grown wizard will always find something handy in an egg if he breaks one. The shell of course is not thrown away. It can be melted down in a pot over the fire and used for making multicoloured bubble-gum with bubbles that don't burst until they are at least as large as beach ball with a diameter of one yard.

Egg-chips can also be effective in some potions, like memory potion to make it more durable when stored away.
